Flugabwehrraketengeschwader 1

Flugabwehrraketengeschwader 1 (Air Defence Wing 1) or (FlaRakG 1) Schleswig-Holstein is a unit of the German Luftwaffe based in Husum. The Wing is equipped with the Patriot air defense missile system

History

The Air Defense Missile Wing was established in 1959 as Air Defense Regiment 3 in Essen. In the same year the unit was transferred to Bocholt. In 1960 the unit transferred to Osnabrück. In 1965 the Hawk air defense missle system was introduced and the unit was renamed Regiment 3 "Krummenort" and moved to near Rendsburg. 1967 moved to the unit to Luneberg Heath. There it was established in 1989 to command an air defense missile system and 1992 reclassified as an air missile squadron. In 1994, the squadron moved to its present location. In 2001, the HAWK weapon system was deactivated.

On 1 January 2011, the squadron took formal responsibility for the weapon system MANTIS. To operate this weapons system by the Air Force called into service an additional an anti-aircraft group at Husum on April 1, 2011.

The unit has had the nickname "Schleswig-Holstein" since 1989. The unit is currently part of the Luftwaffe's 4th Air Division.

Tasks

The unit is tasked with using the Patriot air defense Missle weapon system to defend against the threat of aircraft and ballistic missiles.

The air defense missile wing 1 is now a unit of the 4th Air Division.
